1st July 2010: A Day of Remembrance for Hijab Martyr Marwa Shirbini

Following the killing of Marwa Shirbini on 1st July 2009, Protect Hijab called for the 1st July of every year to be marked as a day in remembrance of her murder in Germany defending her right to wear the Hijab.
This day will also be marked as a day of solidarity with all women around the world who face racism and religious intolerance by being prevented from wearing their Hijab/religious dress as they freely choose to do.
The 1st July 2010 will be dedicated as International Hijab Solidarity Day to commemorate the shocking crime against Marwa Shirbini and to defend the right of Muslim Women to wear the Hijab/religious dress everywhere in the world. It will also be an opportunity to present the beauty of Islamic teachings and the pride of Muslim women as positive shapers of their communities.

ACTION

  1. Hold peaceful vigils in remembrance of Marwa.

  2. Dedicate Jumaa Khutba on Friday the 2nd of July 2010 to speak about Marwa (the Hijab Martyr), Hijab/Niqab ban, Islamophobia and steadfastness on ones principles.


    Protect Hijab also encourages the following:

Activities on the day can include peaceful vigils in your towns/cities, writing articles, contacting Members of Parliament to highlight the case and requesting contact with politicians to condemn the crime and pass legislations to end the ban on religious dress in German states, France, Belgium, Turkey and other countries.

  4. Contact TV channels, radio stations and others to mark a minute of silence during their airing time and dedicate programs to Marwa and Hijab ban in general.

  5. Establish chat rooms, websites, etc. in remembrance of Marwa and Hijab ban in general

  6. Organise any other peaceful activities suitable for each country, culture and systems.

  7. Extend the remembrance day to include the 2nd, 3rd, 4th July to take account of time differences around the world and national holidays
